Orthoptics and Optometry - Tameside & Glossop
Welcome to the Orthoptic and Optometry service. We provide a vision testing service for all ages and for a wide variety of conditions within Tameside and Glossop.
Adults are seen in the outpatient clinic at Tameside Hospital. If you have vision problems following a stroke you may be seen whilst on the ward as an inpatient, in the outpatient department at Tameside Hospital or in some circumstances in your home. If you have glaucoma, your visual fields and pressures can be monitored by the orthoptist instead of having to see the consultant ophthalmologist at each visit. We can help to control double vision and provide exercises for certain eye conditions when necessary.
The registered orthoptists are experts in visual development, binocular vision, eye muscle defects and eye conditions associated with other illnesses. We specialise in the following areas:
- Reduced vision and squints
- Stroke
- Glaucoma
- Children with additional needs
- Vision screening
- Visual field testing
- Visual processing assessments
To access the Orthoptic service you need to be resident in Tameside and Glossop or be registered with a Tameside and Glossop GP. We accept referrals from any health care provider and we have an open referral system for children.
To access the Optometry service you need to be referred by the Orthoptist.
For your first visit you will be sent a letter inviting you to ring to arrange an appointment at a location and time that is suitable. A letter will be sent to confirm the appointment.
Think about what questions you may wish to ask. Please bring any glasses that you wear and a list of any medication that you or your child is on.
At the community clinics, you will be asked to report to the reception desk. At Tameside Hospital please report to the Outpatients Reception in Hartshead South Atrium. You or your child can expect to have an assessment of your vision and how the eyes function. The records will be updated and you will be advised on the outcome and what happens next.
