We provide diagnosis, treatment and support for people with breast cancer and benign breast conditions. The clinic enables diagnostic tests to be carried out in one day. These are breast examination, mammograms, ultrasound scans and small needle biopsies. Results are then available on the same day. Larger needle biopsies can also be carried out with results available in a week. Thankfully, most of the people attending clinic will go home reassured that they do not have cancer. The small number that do, have the reassurance that their cancer can be treated by talking through an initial treatment plan, and most will know their treatment date.
Shock, anxiety and stress are normal reactions to the diagnosis and can interfere with taking in information. Therefore all patients are offered the opportunity to discuss care and treatment and any concerns or worries they may have before they start their treatment. Ongoing support from the specialist nurses is available throughout and after the treatment pathway.
If you have found a change in your breasts that needs to be checked out by specialists, or if you are concerned about your family history of breast cancer, you should seek out this service.
You need to see your GP for referral to the service if you have any breast symptoms. If you are concerned about your family history, please ask your GP to refer direct to the Family History clinic.
