Monday 6 – Sunday 12 February is National Apprenticeship Week, shining a light on the valuable work of apprentices and their contributions to the NHS.

Throughout the week, the apprenticeships team at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS FT are running a series of webinars and information stands at Tameside Hospital to showcase the benefits of being an apprentice.

The Trust currently employs over 120 apprentices working in a variety of roles.

We tell the story of two current apprentices, Kelly Dolan and Amber Henthorn.

Kelly Dolan

Always looking for ways to advance her career, Kelly Dolan was inspired to apply for the Registered Nurse Degree apprenticeship to continue learning while remaining in paid employment.

After starting her career in Podiatry and Diabetes, Kelly has worked in the District Nursing service in Tameside for almost 8 years and continues to enhance her clinical skillset, including undertaking a Level 6 Leg Ulcer Management course.

The apprenticeship has exposed her to other areas of the Trust she previously has not worked in, including an insight into how acute healthcare works, and the placements have allowed her to take charge of her own learning journey to highlight areas of development.

Through her ongoing work and educational development, Kelly is excited for her future as an adult nurse and is looking forward to having a positive impact on patients in our area.

Amber Henthorn

Already employed by the Trust as a Project Support Assistant in the Service Transformation Team, Amber Henthorn began her Level 4 Associate Project Manager apprenticeship in January 2019 as she wanted to combine practical experience with further learning about project management.

By putting the tools and methods from her studies into practice, Amber grew in confidence while supporting projects and actively contributed new ideas to increase efficiency.

The apprenticeship has supported Amber to move forward with both her personal and career development.  Since starting, Amber has gained a promotion in the Person & Community Centred Approaches Team, passed her original apprenticeship with a distinction and commenced further learning in Level 6 Project Management.

Listen to Amber talk about her own journey as an apprentice at TGICFT
