Engineering students at Tameside College to take part in prestigious ‘cadet’ scheme with their local NHS trust.
Five students from the College's engineering department have been selected to take part in the scheme with Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care Foundation Trust.
The 20 week project will see the students working alongside staff in the Trust’s electrical and mechanical engineering, project management, facilities and building departments, alongside completing a theory project.
The aim of the scheme is to provide students with vital work experience and practical skills in engineering, alongside their studies at the College.
After taking part in a rigorous interview and selection process, five students were offered places, from an original 15 students who applied for the scheme. This process was modelled on the NHS’s own recruitment process, to provide students with real world experience of job hunting.
The students taking part in the programme will begin their placements later this month and will spend one day a week for 20 weeks in the workplace.
Jonathan Hobson, employer work experience recruitment officer at Tameside College, said: “I am extremely grateful to Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust for providing this opportunity to our students. This cadet scheme will give students invaluable knowledge of what it is like to work within, not only an NHS trust, but also an engineering setting. The partnership between the College and Trust is growing and I hope that in the future more schemes such as this can benefit our students. Congratulations to the five successful students who will be taking part.”
Karen James, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care Foundation Trust chief executive, said: “We are passionate about investing in the next generation within our local community and creating more partnership opportunities between the Trust and the College. The added experience and knowledge gained will be invaluable when applying for their first role in their chosen career and we hope that if they like what they see, they might decide to choose a profession within the NHS."
