There’s nothing like the bond between mother and daughter but Sharon and Megan Aldous from Glossop have taken it one stage further …
Megan (27) was so inspired by Sharon’s dedication as a midwife at Tameside Hospital’s maternity unit that she decided it was the career for her too. She recently qualified and now the pair work as part of a dedicated team of expert midwives bringing new lives into the world.
Maternity Matron, Rachel Alexander – Patton says it’s the first time that the hospital has had a mum and daughter midwife team at Tameside and Glossop NHS IC Foundation Trust, and she couldn’t be more proud. She explains; “Sharon has been a credit to our service and to the women and families of Tameside for many years. We are really pleased that Megan chose to join our multi- award winning team and follow in her mother's footsteps. For me as a manager its very humbling to know that they have both chosen to follow their vocation with us.”
Sharon has been a qualified midwife for 11 years at Tameside and even did her three year training at the hospital. She works on Ward 27 and says she stopped counting the number of babies she’s delivered when the figure reached 100. She couldn’t be more proud of Megan and the wonderful future she has ahead of her.
Megan says that as a young girl deciding on a career she was always inspired by her mum. She explains; "She is hardworking and always taught me that I can do whatever I wanted to if I worked hard! Seeing my mum have a rewarding career whilst caring for four young children gave me the inspiration to become a midwife as she always told me what a rewarding career it was. Midwifery is exactly what I expected as my mum never tried to hide the challenges it can bring but always said she would never for a minute change becoming a midwife.
“My first qualified delivery will always be a special moment for me. It will always stay in my memory as it gave me confidence in myself as a newly- qualified midwife and it was the most perfect birth with a lovely family that I had the privilege to look after.” She adds.
Trust Chief Nurse, Peter Weller says it's been a pleasure and privilege to welcome Megan to the team. He says, “At Tameside and Glossop, we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality maternity care, which is personalised, safe and specific to individual needs. The birth of every child is special and our Maternity Unit provides support to thousands of families each year, caring for them and their babies. Generations of midwives have looked after expectant parents and their parents too, in a supporting, professional and caring environment. It’s wonderful to know the tradition is being carried on by Sharon and Megan.”
