We are encouraging residents in Tameside to get involved in the Greater Manchester Month of Hope by having open conversations about their mental health, whilst also sharing positive messages.
The Month of Hope is about raising awareness of suicide. It runs from World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September until World Mental Health Day on 10 October. It is now in its third year and was launched as part of the Shining a Light on Suicide campaign.
This year, after an incredibly difficult 18 months, organisations across Greater Manchester are joining together to spread hope. Encouraging someone to talk before suicide seems their only option. Together local people can help prevent suicide.
People can join in by sharing what gives them hope, with family and friends, as well as on social media using the hashtag #MonthofHope.
Events
To get involved in the Month of Hope people can take part in one of the main events and activities taking place during the month:
- Vigil of Remembrance in Tameside- 10 September
- The International Association of Suicide Preventions (IASP) Cycle Around the Globe – 10 September – 10 October
- Words of Hope: online poetry reading event – 23 September

Help and support
Suicide affects us all. Encourage someone to talk before suicide seems their only option. Together people can help prevent suicide. Find out how.
Anyone struggling to cope can call Samaritans on 116 123 or text Shout on 85258.
People can also take the free 20-minute training to learn how to save a life.
If someone is bereaved by suicide, they do not need to deal with their grief alone. Greater Manchester Bereavement Service can find the right support for them.
Anyone worried about their own mental health or because they are worried about someone they know, for example an older person, a child or an adult can find mental health help and support local to Tameside from lots of organisations. Visit Tameside Council's website.
